Yesterday Darlene (Paul's sister in law) found out that her soon to be adopted niece Atani was killed in the Haitian earthquake. Atani was in the process of being adopted by Darryl (Darlene's brother) and Lorie (her sister in law). Over the past 2 years Lorie volunteered at Atani's orphanage in Haiti and became very attached to her. She has made countless trips to volunteer and proceed with the adoption. Darryl and Lorie started the adoption process about a year ago and it was in the final phases.
Tomorrow on Good Morning America Darryl and Lorie will be interviewed. They'll be talking about Atani and the orphanage their church sponsors. They will also be speaking about donations that can be made so the orphanage can be rebuilt. Right now the orphange is half demolished and the other half is unstable so all of the girls are having to sleep outdoors. Atani was the only girl who lost her life. I believe she was coming down the stairway when it collapsed. Another girl was missing in the capital city, she was getting ready to go home with her adoptive family. She and her new family have been found and are all safe.
This morning Darlene was telling me about how much she and her family already saw Atani as a part of their family. Even though most of the family had never met Atani everyone was so excited about her adoption and considered her a close family member.
If you're home in the morning be sure to watch GMA and keep the Johnson family in your thoughts. Also, when I have more information about financial support I will be sure to post it as the church Darryl and Lorie are a part of have already started planning when they can go help these young ladies.
Love,
Susan
